Job Description Summary:This position provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders.Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling required.

ABGC board certified/board eligible required.

Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the field or in a related area required.

Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within field required.

Demonstrated ability to synthesize and apply a broad range of psychosocial knowledge and practice interventions with a high degree of autonomy, collaboration, and skill preferred.

Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.

Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

Job Specific Duties:

Documents patient and family assessment, history, diagnosis, treatment and transition care plan, and progress. Evaluates the data and applies to the evaluation of what family history means for each individual.

Educates providers and health professionals and ensures appropriate patient referral, care and c oordination of genetic testing.

Assesses reoccurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions.

Educates families regarding potential health risks. Translates complex genetic information into understandable terms for patients and family members.

Interprets laboratory results and communicates findings to patients and/or providers.

Assist families with understanding genetic testing options and the implications of undergoing genetic testing. Addresses psychosocial and ethical issues associated with a genetic disorder or genetic test result.

Assists patients to make informed decisions for a current or future pregnancy in a supportive and no-directive environment as applicable.

Complies with the legal and regulatory laws and reporting and practice standards within scope of practice.

Evaluates and/or makes recommendations for standards of care or clinical operations, ensures compliance with applicable regulations, ethics, legislation, and/or policies.

Writes detailed consultation reports to provide information on complex genetic concepts to patients and/or referring physicians.

As applicable to Prenatal area: obtains family histories, educates on hereditary risks, assists patients in understanding complex information regarding screening and testing options, and provides balanced and supportive counseling in the event of a genetic diagnosis or birth defects.

As applicable to Pediatric area: allies with local pediatricians, family practice providers, and pediatric specialists to provide genetic counseling services for those identified with a family history of genetic disease, provides pre-test counseling and coordination of genetic testing, and counseling regarding abnormal genetic test results.

Triages care for further clinical consultation with state medical genetics program.
